In the 6th century, Slav people living in Poland began to migrate West and South. The Eastern Slavonic language spread, giving rise to the modern languages of Ukrainian, Belorussian and Russian. In the 9th century, the missionary Cyril, wrote down scriptures in Old Church Slavonic to further preach Christianity. Cyril invented a Slavonic alphabet, now known as the Cyrillic alphabet, which is based on the Greek alphabet. In Russia, Old Church Slavonic remained the written language until the mid-18th century, when the need for a more simplified written language closer to the spoken language became apparent. This is when the modern Russian language was born. Today, 153 million people speak Russian as their first language and an additional 61 million speak it as a second language. It is not surprising that the demand for Russian translation services is on the rise.
- The language is written using the Cyrillic alphabet, which consists of 33 letters with 10 vowels, 21 consonants and two signs. Russian today is an almost perfectly phonetically spelled language.
- Grammar is complex. A certified Russian translator should perform the English-to-Russian translation. The noun case system includes six different case functions that demonstrate the ways in which nouns and adverbs are understood in any given written or spoken utterance.
- Because Russian is the most widely spoken language across Eurasia, there are many dialects. However, linguists do not agree upon any type of system for classifying these dialects including verbal, grammatical, and phonetic variations.
